The Holocaust (1986)

oils on canvas : 92 x 122 cm

The giant outline of Anne's head is also the tunnel leading to the camp. The head is filled with the background view of the house, the tree and a wall-hedge. This part is lighter in tone and depicts hope as compared to the darker tonality of the rest of the painting which symbolizes despair. A railway line runs from the house to the foreground. As it passes the outline of the face it enters the darkened world of camp reality. The shape of Anne's head merges into the background.
