Anne's bedroom, light in tone and representing an inner chamber, a place of hope, contrasts with both the tumbling house and 'outside reality' pressing against the bedroom walls upon the right. On the left the camp inmates are the other side of the hope which emanates from the hiding place. Dark clouds whirl like smoke from crematoria on the left, enveloping a small area of light sky. The bedroom steps lead outside where the chestnut tree and other foliage creeps darkly over the lawn, extending in grotesque, nightmarish, patterns.
In this painting Anne faces us from the dual realities of hope and utter despair.
