Descent To The Camp (1994)

oils on canvas : 92 x 122 cm

The light shines through the window of Anne's bedroom, but the colour darkens gradually on the descending steps. On the left side is the limb like post of the camp wall and on the right side is the railway track and the images of people descending after their transportation in the cattle trucks. In the lower right of the painting lies an oven in the crematoria. The lines of the steps link up diagonally across the painting with the edges of the wooden bunks which represent limbs. Towards the top of the painting is a small rectangle, the attic window, and an opening towards a free and better future.
