Auschwitz (1995)

Here we have the enormous outline of Anne's head. Enclosed inside lies the house, her hiding place, the place of her private dreams amidst the darkness round her. Across this image the entry to Auschwitz has been cut, where Anne, her mother and her sister first went. The rail track can be viewed in a double way: (a) from the house to the camp and (b) from the foreground to and through the gateway of Auschwitz to the oven beyond at the end of the dark tunnel, where so many perished in despair. On either side of the rail track are the posts of the camp and here the faces and figures of camp inmates look outwards… towards us…
